These exquisite Victorian Whitby Jet earrings showcase a simple and understated hand-carved leaf design, set into pinchbeck settings. Making them truly beautiful and one-of-a-kind antique pieces. At first glance these may look like glass, but they are not. If you study the photos closely, each earring has its own unique carved detail, slightly different to the other. The earrings were very dirty when I acquired them, so I have given them a good clean. They have polished up beautifully and the pinchbeck is now lovely and shiny. They have brand new gold filled ear hooks and are just raring to go now!
Mourning jewellery became very popular following Prince Albert’s death in 1861. During this period and long afterwards, black jewellery was the height of fashion, and not just for those in mourning.
Lovely size, not too large and not too small.
Each leaf in its pinchbeck setting measures: just shy of 1” x ¾” or 2.5cm x 2cm
Drop including the ear wires: measures 1 ½” or 3.7cm
