A super cool and really rare vintage, mid-century, Brutalist Modernist Cross pendant necklace, by SPHINX. The cross itself is made up of both shiny and brushed silver tone metal, which makes for a fabulous contrast, particularly when it catches the light. Signed with the design number 1608 on the reverse.
Sphinx was an English Costume Jewellery Designer and Manufacturer, established in 1948. They were famous for their exquisitely designed high-end pieces with fabulous rhinestones, which looked just like the ‘real thing’. They made jewellery for Kenneth Jay Lane, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, Saks 5th Ave, etc. Therefore, many of their pieces were not signed, but stamped instead with a design number. This is one of those rare and highly collectable pieces which is numbered.
The chain measures: 24” or 61cm.
The cross measures: 3” x 2” or 7.5cm x 5cm
The chain is nice and long, enabling this to be worn by either a lady or a man.
