A gorgeous vintage Art Deco early unsigned Sphinx brooch. The brooch is set with clear diamond rhinestones and is rhodium plated. These pretty crescent shapes, which form the petals of the flower, were a recurring theme in Sphinx jewellery – you see them again and again in their brooches, throughout the decades.
All of the stones are present, although some have darkened a little with age and some are replacements, but this is to be expected with an older piece, and in my opinion only adds to its immense charm. Because of this, and because it isn’t signed, it has been priced accordingly. The brooch fastens with a rollover safety catch and the rhodium plating on the reverse is still nice and shiny.
Sphinx was an English Costume Jewellery Designer and Manufacturer, established in 1948. They were famous for their exquisitely designed high-end pieces with fabulous rhinestones, which looked just like the real thing. They made jewellery for Kenneth Jay Lane, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, Saks 5th Ave, etc. Therefore, many of their pieces were not signed.
